The standard guardrails organizations use to protect employee identities are often ineffective for contractors, business partners or vendors since they bring their own devices.

Many businesses excel at access management in an environment where they have complete control over the devices and software but struggle to implement identity safeguards in an extended workforce setting that's more heterogeneous and offers fewer controls, says Okta President Sagnik Nandy. Firms must adjust their detection, protection and resolution policies to safeguard the extended workforce (see: Okta Clears Up Customer Identity Confusion as SMB Sales Dip).

"In a setup where everyone can bring in their own device and there's a proliferation of the types of operating systems and devices, you need a neutral solution," Nandy says. "Many of these users are not limited to a single device. They will be going back and forth across these devices, and you want to create as much consistency as you can create while being in this heterogeneous environment."

Prior to joining Okta in August 2021, he served as vice president of engineering at Google, where he oversaw several critical components of its core advertising business, which is the backbone of Google's growth and revenue. During his 15 years at Google, Nandy also helped build the company's measurement and analytics offerings and took several products from inception to becoming market leaders. Nandy has extensive experience in senior leadership positions and end-to-end technology development and design.
