The Hottest Security Technologies for Early-Stage Startups

Ballistic's Barmak Meftah on Why Service Mesh Is the Future of Zero Trust Design

Organizations looking to adopt zero trust architectures are increasing pursuing service mesh rather than microsegmentation due to new innovations, said Ballistic Ventures General Partner Barmak Meftah.

Microsegmentation excels at limiting the attack surface but comes with significant overhead expense, while service mesh offers a similar level of protection without anywhere near the same upfront costs, Meftah said. And in the API security space, Meftah said, startups have focused both on providing an end-to-end set of microservices as well as authenticating and authorizing APIs to interact with one another.

"I'm sure there are going to be emerging companies that are going to externalize the guts of these security controls to allow application developers to code to these APIs and build cyber features within the fabric of the software," Meftah said.

In this video interview with Information Security Media Group at RSA Conference 2023, Meftah also discusses:

  • The top threats startups are addressing around data protection and access control;
  • How the convergence of IT and OT has informed Ballistic's investment strategy;
  • Why early-stage investments are faring better than growth-stage investments.

Meftah mentors startup CEOs through the complexities and challenges of building great teams and companies. He has more than 25 years of experience building market-leading companies. Most recently, he served as the president of AT&T Cybersecurity.
