What began with a Commodore 64 in the 1980s - sparking a lifelong interest in computers - resulted in a passion for cybersecurity for John F. Banghart, senior director for cybersecurity services at Venable LLP. He said upskilling, creative problem-solving and collaboration are the key pillars of this dynamic industry. "You can teach almost anything to somebody with the right attitude," he said.

Banghart's 30-year career includes roles at the National Institute of Standards and Technology and the White House, where he addressed the infamous Heartbleed vulnerability. He was part of the initial team to help develop the NIST Cybersecurity Framework under the Obama administration. At Venable, he applies his diverse experience to lead cybersecurity services that support clients and the broader community.

"During my career, we were forced to think creatively. We didn't have a lot of guidance back in the '90s or well into the 2000s. And while we have all of that now, we still have to be creative because we don't know what the risk tomorrow is going to look like," he said. "Using the guidance that we have, understanding the regulation and working with our attorneys and compliance folks - but being creative about how we address these risks - positions us to be effective when we get surprised, because we will be surprised again and again."

In this video interview with Information Security Media Group at the 2024 Healthcare Cybersecurity Summit, conducted as part of the CyberEdBoard's ongoing Profiles in Leadership series, Banghart also discussed:

  • Lessons learned from managing the Heartbleed vulnerability;
  • Strategies for developing a strong cybersecurity workforce;
  • The benefits of being a member of the CyberEdBoard.

Banghart has extensive experience in cybersecurity including risk management, government policy, standards and regulatory compliance, and incident management. He is a member of the CyberEdBoard.
